At Chappell Central, we know that safety is a state-of-mind that starts at the top. Craig Meyer, President at Chappell Central admits, “When I was in the field thirty years ago, I’m surprised there weren’t more accidents.” Today, he knows how important safety is to the company and most importantly, his employees’ families. He remembers, “When safety began to come to the forefront I remember griping about ‘new rules’ and associated expenses. It took a while but the light finally came on. Actually, another employer put it into perspective when he said, ‘we want to send our guys home to their families in one piece.’ – that hit home for me.”
Dave Hansen from our Sparks, Nevada location recently returned to Willmar to implement our equipment safety and maintenance program that he started a year ago with great success. Not only does the program deal with the safe use of the manufacturing equipment we have, but it also spells out required maintenance. Since a properly maintained machine is a safer machine this is an integral part of our safety program. Located at each machine is a description of potential hazards that are specific to that machine and how to avoid them. In addition, the information contains a required maintenance schedule and a repair ticket to be turned in when repairs are necessary.
Thankfully, a safety program that seemed to be a hassle years ago has become second nature now. At Chappell Central, we continue to expand our safety programs. We have come a long way but need to continually strive to continue to improve and get everybody home to their families safely. It’s great to have Dave on board to help us solidify that commitment.
