New Deburring Machine Increases Safety and Efficiencies

Chappell Central has added a new Weber deburring sanding machine to their manufacturing division.  The deburring machine performs edge conditioning on the parts,  creating a better finished product. Prior to having this machine, the deburring process was done by hand, one part at a time, by five people at Chappell Central.  Now with the deburring machine added to our fleet of fabrication capabilities, the process is much more efficient.  Just one person can automatically do the deburring of a part up to 40 inches wide and 12 feet long.

Benefits of Chappell Central’s Deburring Equipment

  • Chappell Central deburring machineEdge conditioning for cleaner finished product
  • Polishing and graining of flat stainless steel parts
  • Removing sharp edges makes it safer for your employees to handle parts
  • More efficient deburring process when made automated with a machine

Matt Kelly, Plant Manager at Chappell Central, said that making parts safer for staff to handle is important to many Minnesota manufacturers, Novatech Engineering processes their parts with us, and deburring is a part of their safety process so sharp edges are removed.”   With the deburring machine, it not only automates processes and improves efficiencies, but leaves for a better looking product, with a smoother, safer edge.

If you are interested in requesting a quote for your manufacturing or fabrication project, or have questions about the deburring process, please contact us.

Not your Typical Air Duct Cleaning

Commercial grade Air Duct CleanerChappell Central has always offered air duct cleaning, but not like this.  Their new commercial grade air duct cleaner is a ”high velocity vacuum system” that can be used on air ducts large or small.  It uses not just air, but also brushes, to clean air ducts in your residence, business, or public building. With a 36 horsepower gasoline engine and 250 feet of 8 inch round vacuum hoses, this is not your typical portable air duct cleaner.

This HVAC equipment is the latest and greatest in air duct cleaning and unlike anything else offered in the West Central Minnesota area.

What makes air duct cleaning with Chappell Central better:

    • High velocity vacuum pulls larger volume of air and dust
    • Brushes “scrub” out from the top while vacuuming
    • Includes testing for dust counts and guaranteed results
    • Works on both smaller residential jobs or larger duct work on commercial jobs

Watch for this trailer in your neigborhood!  Brad (the friendly character on the trailer) will be cleaning air ducts all over Willmar and West Central Minnesota.  Contact Chappell Central at 320-235-2151  for a free consultation and estimate on clearing the dust in your home today.

Chappell Central Talks about Radon with the West Central Tribune

The West Central Tribune recently interviewed Chappell Central’s Residential Sales Specialist, Randy Sather, about solutions for home radon problems.  Here is an excerpt from January 28, 2012 West Central Tribune Extra! article by Ashley White.

A Silent Danger: In Minnesota, about one in three homes pose health risk

When left untreated, radon can cause serious and lasting health concerns. According to the EPA, exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking. Each year, radon accounts for about 20,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States.

In Minnesota, it’s estimated that about one in three homes has a high enough level of radon to pose health risks, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Factors that contribute to this high rate include Minnesota’s geology and climate. Randy Sather, residential sales representative at Chappell Central in Willmar, said that radon is a common problem he sees when he inspects homes in the area for air quality.

“We have among the highest levels of radon in the state,” Sather said. “I would say the majority of houses we test have some form of radon. Some are easier fixed than others.”

According to Sather, radon, which originates in soil, can enter homes in any number of ways. Typically, it comes through cracks or openings in walls or floors, but it can also come from heated air rising; fireplaces, wood stoves or furnaces; clothes dryers; or exhaust fans in kitchens or bathrooms.

Randy Sather of Chappell Central shows a sample of an inline fan for residential radon mitigation systems.

There are two ways that Chappell Central eliminates radon from homes, Sather said. If the house has a radon level under 10 pCi/L, they usually recommend an air exchange unit. This device ventilates the home, exhausting air from the inside and bringing in fresh air from the outside.

If the level of radon is above 10 pCi/L, Chappell Central usually installs a subfloor ventilation system with an inline fan, Sather said. This method works similar to a vacuum, sucking the radon out and ventilating it outside of the house, causing it to dissipate in the air. The fan is usually installed under a slab of cement in a basement or in an attic.

This month is National Radon Action Month, and Sather said Chappell Central is working hard to relay the message that everyone should have their homes tested for radon, and the sooner the better.

“Some people genuinely don’t want to know if it’s there, but even if you don’t like what you find out, at least you’ll be aware and can take steps to fix the problem,” Sather said. “Think of it this way: You can easily make a comparison between carbon monoxide and radon. The only difference is time. One of them will kill you quickly, while the other is a longer, slower death.”

Why Test your Home’s Indoor Air Quality?

The EPA has designated January as National Radon Action month. In an effort to help educate the people in West Central Minnesota about Radon and other indoor air quality issues, Chappell Central will be posting a series of blog posts this month about Radon dangers, testing, and fixing.

There are high risks of radon is West Central Minnesota, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that home owners take the first step of testing their home for radon.

Have you gotten your home tested yet?Indoor air quality

Safety is the main reason you may want to test the air quality in your home.  Gases like radon or carbon monoxide can be deadly when they are contained indoors. Other Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) issues range from comfort-related problems such as humidity, to high allergen levels and high airborne chemical particles that compromise health. The air testing equipment that the HVAC professionals at Chappell Central use is called Air Advice.  Air Advice not only tests for radon, but also tests for many other indoor air quality problems.

According to a 2007 study involving hundreds of homes across the US, Air Advice determined that more than 90% of homes have at least one air quality problem, and many have more then one. Some office buildings and factories even have indoor air quality issues. [Read more...]

Office Air Quality and Sick Building Syndrome

Many office and factory workers spend a lot of time inside a building during the day, but aren’t aware of the harmful effects of indoor air pollution.  Indoor air pollution may come from mold, building materials, cleaning agents or chemicals, and even copy machines.  Without the proper air ventilation system, indoor air pollution can affect workers’ health.Avoid Sick Building SYnrome

HVAC Systems that are not properly installed or maintained can lead to Sick Building Syndrome or SBS. SBS is usually temporary but can sometimes lead to long-term problems, such as Legionnaire’s disease. Some of the symptoms of SBS include dry eyes and nose and irritated throat or skin. Employers with SBS could notice a drop in worker efficiency or more use of sick days when there is poor air quality in their building.  In a Report to Congress on Indoor Air Quality in 1989, these costs related to loss of work in industry were estimated to be “tens of billions of dollars per year”. By installing an HVAC System that improves indoor air quality, employers could see improved employee health, productivity, and morale.

Depending on the nature of the pollutant and air quality problem, usually ventilation or mitigation can be the solution. When Minnesota weather and the building’s construction allows, natural ventilation by opening a window can help air out a stuffy room. Otherwise, it may be beneficial to install an air exchanger or other ventilation system.  In instances where pollutants may be strong in a designated area, an exhaust system such as a local exhaust ventilation or a chemical fume hood can improve indoor air quality. Consideration can also be placed on air cleaners in an HVAC System like High Efficiency (HEPA) furnace filters or ionizers, but a properly installed and maintained  HVAC system must also be in place.

If you want to learn more about how to improve the air quality in your office or workplace in West Central Minnesota, please contact Chappell Central. We can help you determine if your commercial HVAC System is providing adequate indoor air quality for your staff.

Benefits of an Air Exchanger

If you have allergies or respiratory problems, you know the importance of fresh outdoor air.  Being in an air-tight home or office can cause some problems for people with these health issues.  Long Minnesota winters do not make it easier.  According to the EPA, studies have shown that air within homes can be more seriously polluted then even the most industrial cities.  With some people spending approximately 90% of their time indoors, they are more susceptible to the effects of indoor air pollution. Proper ventilation with an air exchanger could help.

Even if your home is older and not tightly insulated, it is likely that in the winter, the air inside your home gets stale.  Air exchangers can help bring fresh outdoor air inside the home, while exhausting an equal amount of stale air, providing a healthy balance to your ventilation system.

Air Exchange Ventilator (AEV) Benefits:venmar air exchanger

  • Reduce excess humidity which can cause mold, mildew and deterioration to your home
  • Reduce dangerous pollutant fumes or gases
  • Remove particles like dust and dander
  • Help reduce heating and cooling costs for highly insulated homes
  • Remove “stuffiness” and help freshen up the home

Air exchangers (also known as heat recovery ventilators or air-to-air heat exchangers) can be used in conjunction with your other residential or commercial HVAC equipment, such as forced-air heating or central air conditioning systems.  Your furnace combined with an air exchange ventilation system can help create a healthy indoor environment through improved air quality.

Interested in learning more about how an energy efficient air exchange ventilator can improve the air quality in your home?  Contact an HVAC professional at Chappell Central for more information about Venmar Air Exchangers.
